Music Festivals

Every summer since 1959, the city holds the very prominent song contest labeled as the Benidorm International Song Festival. This competition is credited for churning out the likes of international musicians, otherwise Spanish celebrities like Julio Iglesias, Raphael or El Duo Dinamico.
br> For three days, Benidorm’s football stadium hosted some of the biggest names in international pop music in the Music Meeting festival last August. The stellar lineup included James Brown, Jamiroquai, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, US3, Echo & The Bunnymen and The Prodigy. The stadium was packed to the rafters - over 12,000 thronged to witness the festival. Ian McCullogh warbled some of his old hits like ‘The Cutter’ and ‘Lips like Sugar.’
br> The 72-year old James Brown appeared in a flashy red suit. His band was a harmonious ensemble of 17f tightly coordinated musicians, singers and dancers. Brown’s performance was a virtual musical of high octane classic soul, funk and rap.
